Free M4A Transcription: Convert M4A to Text in Your Browser
Transcribe an M4A recording or an exported iPhone voice memo without sending the file to a transcription server. Get a transcript you can review and download as TXT, SRT, VTT, or JSON.
Select a local M4A file to keep its audio on your device. Requires WebGPU; the speech model downloads on first use. File decoding depends on browser codec support.
How M4A transcription works in Whisper Web
M4A transcription converts spoken words in an audio recording into readable text. After you select an M4A file from your device, the browser decodes its audio and runs the Whisper speech recognition model locally. The original file is not uploaded to a transcription service. If you're transcribing an iPhone voice memo, you can save the recording to Files before selecting it.
The browser downloads the selected model when needed, so the first run may be slower. Once transcription finishes, you can replay segments to check wording, names, and punctuation. Audio-to-text accuracy depends on background noise, speakers, language, and model size; it is not guaranteed for every recording.
Supported formats for M4A transcription
The file chooser on this dedicated page is limited to M4A audio. Whisper Web's general audio transcription tool also accepts MP3, WAV, MP4 and WebM; video decoding depends on your browser and its available codecs.
| Recording or file | Where to use it | Transcript exports |
|---|---|---|
| M4A (often AAC audio) | Choose M4A on this page | TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON |
| iPhone Voice Memos saved as .m4a | Choose M4A on this page | TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON |
| MP3, WAV, MP4, WebM | General transcription tool | TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON |
An M4A extension alone does not guarantee compatibility: AAC and ALAC variants, codecs, and browser support differ. If your file will not decode, try a supported WAV version prepared with another tool.
How to transcribe an M4A file — 3 steps
-
1
Select your M4A file
Click Choose M4A and pick a recording from your device. For iPhone Voice Memos, share the recording to Files first if necessary. The local file stays in your browser.
-
2
Choose model and language
Open Settings to choose a Whisper model. For non-English speech, enable Multilingual and select the spoken language. A smaller model can use fewer resources; larger ones may improve recognition at the cost of time and memory.
-
3
Review and export
Start transcription, listen back to uncertain segments, and export TXT for reading, SRT or VTT for captions, or JSON for timestamped data. Correct names and technical vocabulary before reusing the text.
What can you use M4A to text for?
Transcribe iPhone voice memos
Turn a saved Voice Memos recording into text for personal notes, drafts, or reminders. Export the .m4a recording from your phone before selecting it.
Voice memo transcription without an app
Use a compatible browser rather than installing a separate transcription app. On devices without WebGPU or enough memory, use a modern desktop browser instead.
Interviews and field recordings
Work from local interview recordings without sharing the raw file with a transcription provider. Check speaker changes and specialized terms by listening again.
Lecture and class recordings
Create searchable notes from lectures or tutorials, then compare the transcript with your recording for dates, names, and formulas.
Podcast episodes recorded on mobile
Produce a first draft of show notes or caption files from M4A audio captured on a phone. Review the output before publication, especially when multiple people speak.
M4A vs MP3 vs MP4 — which format should you transcribe?
These file extensions describe different containers or encoding formats, not different transcription methods. You do not need to convert a decodable M4A file to MP3 before transcribing it.
| Format | What it stores | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| M4A | An audio-only container, typically AAC, sometimes lossless ALAC | Select it on this page if your browser can decode it |
| MP3 | Lossy compressed audio | Use the audio-to-text tool |
| MP4 | A media container that can hold video and audio | Open MP4 Transcription for a video recording |
The quality of the original recording matters more than switching file extensions. Whisper Web does not convert M4A to MP3: this page transcribes speech into text. If your goal is to change audio formats, use a separate audio converter.
Whisper Web M4A transcription vs alternatives
Browser-local transcription avoids sending the selected recording to a transcription server, but it needs a capable device. Cloud services and desktop apps offer different trade-offs depending on their provider and plan.
| Feature | Whisper Web | Cloud transcription | Desktop transcription app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local M4A processing | Yes, in the browser | Often requires upload | Depends on the app |
| Signup | Not required | Depends on provider | Depends on app |
| Per-minute fees | None | Varies by plan | Varies by license |
| Hardware needs | WebGPU browser and local memory | Usually server-side processing | Varies by model and app |
| Timestamped exports | SRT, VTT, JSON | Varies | Varies |
M4A transcription FAQ
Can I transcribe an M4A file to text for free?
Yes. Choose a local M4A file and transcribe it in a WebGPU-compatible browser with Whisper Web. There is no account, API key, or per-minute fee. Very long recordings may be limited by your device’s memory and processing power.
Does Whisper Web upload my M4A file?
No. When you choose a local M4A file, the audio is decoded and transcribed on your device, not sent to a transcription server. The browser downloads the speech model when needed, and the site may load separate analytics or advertising resources. The optional URL feature fetches audio over the network.
Can I transcribe an iPhone voice memo?
Usually, yes. Voice Memos recordings saved or shared as an M4A file can be selected here. On an iPhone, use Share in Voice Memos and save the recording to Files if needed. Transcription requires a browser with WebGPU and sufficient memory, so a compatible desktop browser may work better.
What is the difference between M4A and MP3?
M4A is an audio container often holding AAC-encoded audio, but it can also hold lossless ALAC audio. MP3 is a separate lossy audio format. Neither format guarantees better transcription accuracy: recording quality, speech clarity, and browser codec support matter more. Whisper Web transcribes audio; it does not convert M4A files to MP3.
Which export formats can I download?
After transcription, download plain text (TXT), timed subtitles (SRT or VTT), or structured JSON with segment timestamps. Review names, technical terms, and timing before publishing.
How long does M4A transcription take?
It depends on the recording length, your device, and the model. As an illustrative estimate, a five-minute recording might take around 30–90 seconds on a capable modern desktop with a smaller model, but that is not a measured guarantee; it can take longer. The first model download adds time, and longer recordings may require more memory.
